What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as Breast Enlargement is an operation to enlarge and improve the shape of your breasts.

Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation?

The two most common groups of women requesting Breast Augmentation are those who have always felt their breasts were too small and those who were once happy with their size and shape of their breasts but feel that this has changed since having children or becoming older.

What could breast enlargement do for you?

Breast Augmentation makes your breasts larger and improves their shape.
Breast Augmentation could increase your self-confidence and self-esteem.

What happens before my breast augmentation?

During your first appointment you will be assessed and advised by our UK-trained Consultant Plastic Surgeon Chris Dunkin. This assessment includes taking a full medical and breast history and a full examination in the presence of one of our nurses.

Next we will discuss the result you are hoping to achieve, in terms of size and shape. We will go through what breast augmentation involves, including the potential risks and complications. Following this we will give you further information, to help you decide if this is the right choice for you. Our patients usually attend for a second appointment which we find gives you a chance to ask any further questions and helps prepare you for surgery.

What does a breast augmentation involve?

There are a number of different techniques for breast augmentation and we will help you choose the best one for you to achieve the result you want. The operation involves placement of a silicone implant under the breast, takes about an hour and is performed while you are asleep under general anaesthetic.

There are three key quesions in breast augmentation

1. What is the best type of implant?

You can choose round or anatomical-shaped (teardrop) implants, depending on your size and shape and the result you want. We only use cohesive silicone gel implants from the best UK suppliers. Although we have never used PIP Implants with any of our patients, we are happy to offer advice regarding the need for appropriate treatment or replacement. Please call on 0844 272 5951 for more information or click here if you would like to arrange a consultation.

2. Where should my implants go?

Implants are placed under the breast (subglandular) or under the muscle (submuscular), depending on your size and shape and on the result you want.

3. Where will my scar be?

Most women choose a scar hidden under the breast (inframammary fold or IMF) but there are other options. We would be happy to discuss this with you in consultation.

What happens after my breast augmentation?

When you wake after surgery you will have a drip and pain relief. The skin is closed with dissolving stitches and covered with a shower-proof dressing. Drains may be used to stop fluid building up. Most patients go home the following day but same-day discharge is available. We advise that you wear a crop-top until you are comfortable to be fitted for your new bra. Healing takes about a week and you can expect swelling and tenderness for 2-4 weeks. We will encourage you to mobilise straight after surgery and most women resume work and other activities 1-2 weeks later, depending on you and your activities. You can get back to the gym or strenuous activity after 4-6 weeks. Once healed, we advise that you massage your breasts and scars with Bio-oil or moisturising cream. Scars take between 6-12 months to settle down.

What are the downsides to breast augmentation?

There is no such thing as risk-free surgery and breast augmentation is no different. It is important for you to balance the risks and benefits for you. Breast augmentation leaves a short scar (about 5cm), usually hidden under the breast. Potential complications include problems with the anaesthetic (your anaesthetist will talk to you about these) and blood clots (deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolus), bleeding, wound infection, slow healing, changes in sensation, breast pain, asymmetry and poor scars. Very rarely infection involves the implant, which has to be removed and a new implant replaced later. Scar tissue forms around all implants (capsule) and this can become tight and painful with time (capsular contracture). You may need to have the implants exchanged in the future. Following breast augmentation you should examine your breasts regularly for changes and seek medical advice if you concerned.

Are there any alternatives to breast augmentation surgery?

Suction devices worn for a long time can increase breast size but this tends not to be permanent.
